The best hardwoods in India

Teak wood, Rosewood and Walnut wood, are the three premium most commonly woods available in India. The big three enjoy this status as much for their  glossy, satiny appearance, as for their durability.

Sanskriti Lifestyle carries furniture made from all three types of wood, however, 90 % of our furniture is made from teak wood.

The aesthetic aspect and durability of these three woods is what makes them expensive. All three have a mirror-like quality, depending on the type of polish, that cannot be replicated on cheaper woods.

Teak wood: This is without doubt the most durable of all the hard woods available. Its ability to retain its oil even after it has been felled makes it extremely resilient even in extreme temperatures, making it the premium choice for wooden furniture in India. It does not warp, nor  is it prone to attack from wood borers or termites. Teak wood has large, distinctive circular patterns in it, but does not have knots found in lower-quality hardwoods like sheesham and mango, so beware of anyone selling you "teak" with knots.

Rosewood: Rosewood is a lot darker than teak, and has much more distinctive circular patterns than teak. Like teak, it is extremely resistant to wood borers and termites. Rosewood does tend to split sometimes, due to large fluctuations in temperature. Because Rosewood is so dark, exercise caution while buying or making furniture in this wood. It can over-crowd your living space. Try getting one or two accent pieces instead. Sanskriti Lifestyle carries some rosewood furniture too, but in a smaller quantity as compared to teak furniture.

Walnut: Walnut has a rich, warm, dark brown colour. This wood comes from Kashmir, and is not very common. It is one of the premium hard woods in India. Again, with darker woods, exercise caution, especially if your living space is not too large. Furniture made from dark wood can over-power a room.
